Mulch planning density 0.4 t/yd³ (Penn State & UGA Extension hardwood/bark mulch 500–1,000 lb/yd³). Order 1 yd³ with 5% waste. 3 cu ft bags: 9.

0.4 t/yd³

Bag math is the reason bulk yards exist. Once a project crosses a single yard, the plastic and the lifting stop making sense. This page still shows bags because small townhouse beds and apartment patios are real, and because a bulk quote is easier to swallow when you can see the 14-bag alternative.

Not every bag is 2 cubic feet. Read the panel. Some ‘scents’ and cocoa shells are 1.5. Rubber mulch is sold by stone weight, not volume. The calculator assumes the two sizes US home centers actually stack: 2 and 3 cubic feet.

Round up. A half-empty last bag is cheaper than a second trip. If the store only sells 2 cu ft pallets of 60, you now know whether one pallet is a yard and then some (60 ÷ 13.5 ≈ 4.4 yards) or a waste of space.

When the bag count is embarrassing, open the yards-of-mulch page and send a delivery lead. That is the conversion this site is built to make.

Formula

2 cu ft bags = yd³ × 13.5. 3 cu ft bags = yd³ × 9. Round up.

Worked example

0.89 yd³ (a 12 × 8 ft bed at 3 inches) is 12 bags of 2 cu ft or 8 bags of 3 cu ft.
