‘How much mulch’ is a coverage question dressed up as a product question. Coverage is area times depth. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so at 3 inches (0.25 ft) it covers 27 ÷ 0.25 = 108 square feet. At 2 inches it covers 162 square feet. Remember those two numbers and you can estimate a front yard from the sidewalk.
People over-mulch trees and under-mulch new beds. Keep mulch a few inches back from trunks. On new beds, 3 inches suppresses weeds without smothering perennials that emerge through it. On slopes, use a shredded hardwood that knits; nuggets roll downhill.
This page uses the same engine as the mulch calculator with copy aimed at the question people actually type. Add every bed as its own area, including the annoying strip between the sidewalk and the street. That strip is usually the one you forget and then buy in bags at a panic price on Saturday.
If you are comparing a $4 bag to a $36 yard, do the arithmetic: 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft equal a yard. The yard wins on anything bigger than a single mailbox bed, and you are not stuffing 13 bags into a sedan.
Formula
Yards = (ft² × inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27. A yard covers 108 ft² at 3 inches.
Worked example
Three 4 × 10 ft beds at 3 inches: 120 ft² × 0.25 ÷ 27 = 1.11 yd³, or 15 of the 2 cu ft bags.

Mulch on the ground
Typical cover is 3 inches. Range 0.25–0.55 t/yd³. Dyed hardwood sits near 800 lb. Fresh bark and rubber mulch differ — confirm.
